If so I suspect Elizabe 1 CONC th was as well, and then they probably married in Virginia, perhaps in Sur 1 CONC ry County (Va.). [Note: Glenn Thatcher shows both John and Elizabeth bo 1 CONC rn in NC.] 1 CONT = 1 CONT LAND IN NC 1 CONT = I do know that on July 21, 1761 John Atkins received 480 acres in Johnst 1 CONC on Co, NC "on the N.W. side of Neuse River on Buck Branch." This w 1 CONC as by a land "patent" issued under the authority of the British Crown by L 1 CONC ord Granville of England. It was one year after the end of the French a 1 CONC nd Indian War. King George III, who would loose the American Coloni 1 CONC es in a war that started fifteen years later, had been on the British thro 1 CONC ne only one year. 1 CONT = Lord Granville was the one Lord Proprietor, out of eight, who refus 1 CONC ed to sell his New World land back to the Crown when it realized that it h 1 CONC ad given away too much land. Granville's plan was to collect a few fees wi 1 CONC th each grant of land to settlers, and then regularly charge them what amo 1 CONC unted to a tax. This was the agreement John Atkins, along with a few thous 1 CONC and others, accepted so he could have land to farm. 1 CONT = By 1771 there are court records of John Atkins in Wake County. Not becau 1 CONC se they had moved, but rather because that was when Wake County was forme 1 CONC d, largely from Johnston County. Still the family ties to Johnston Coun 1 CONC ty remained. At least two of their sons, Isaac and Josiah, married women f 1 CONC rom Johnston County. 1 CONT = In 1779 John applied for and received land grants in Wake County totali 1 CONC ng 1029 acres. In addition his son William received 630 acres, and John, J 1 CONC r. claimed 640 acres. (640 acres is one square mile). This land appea 1 CONC rs to be southeast of present day Raleigh not far from Johnston County. 1 CONT = I find it remarkable that North Carolina was giving land grants in 17 1 CONC 79 considering that while we had declared independence, the war was goi 1 CONC ng very badly for us. It wasn't until 1781 that Cornwallis was corner 1 CONC ed by the French and Americans and surrendered at Yorktown. Nevertheles 1 CONC s, for a pledge of loyalty to the fledgling country, and the price of a su 1 CONC rvey and a small fee, one could get a land grant. Presumably if the Briti 1 CONC sh had prevailed those that had given such an oath would have lost their l 1 CONC and if not their life. (Just as when the Patriots won, some Loyalists we 1 CONC re stripped of their land). 1 CONT = 1 CONT JOHN ATKINS: PATRIOT 1 CONT = John Atkins support of the Revolutionary cause was apparently sincer 1 CONC e. In February 1776 there was a ten minute skirmish in southeastern NC th 1 CONC at became known as the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. The British plan w 1 CONC as to combine their professional troops with local Loyalist Scots to put d 1 CONC own the Carolina rebels in the lower Cape Fear River area. But the atta 1 CONC ck was poorly organized and the Patriots repulsed the attack, denying t 1 CONC he British a toehold in the northern Carolinas. 1 CONT = While John Atkins did not fight in this battle, he did provide "two wago 1 CONC ns and teams for Col. John Hinton on the expedition to Moores Creek Bridg 1 CONC e. One wagon and team was taken by the Loyalists." 1 CONT = For this, and his participation as a juror during the period, John Atki 1 CONC ns is sited by the Daughters of the American Revolution as a Patriot. This means he turned his 640 acre land grant over to his fath 1 CONC er. 1 CONT = There is some confusion on the cause of John Jr.'s death. Nearly twen 1 CONC ty years after his death a deposition was made that: "near or about the ye 1 CONC ar 1780...that a certain John Atkins, Junr of Wake Co, and Son of John Atk 1 CONC ins Senr of sd county, did turn out as a Volunteer and clear a Class [ 1 CONC of 40 men for 12 mos. service]..., which said John Atkins, Junr, this Depo 1 CONC nent believes died in the Service and the Command of Major General Greene, 1 CONC ..." After which his mother Elizabeth made this claim of benefits bas 1 CONC ed on Revolutionary War Service, Related Benefits: "Elizabeth Atkins of Wa 1 CONC ke County shows that her son, John Atkins, in 1780 enlisted as a sold 1 CONC er in the Continental service and died under the command of General Green 1 CONC e. Unmarried, he devised his property in his will to his father, John Atki 1 CONC ns, now deceased. Deponent feels entitled to bounty land." 1 CONT = This means that Elizabeth was trying to get some of the land promis 1 CONC ed to those that enlisted in the Continental Line (regular U.S. Army) twen 1 CONC ty years after the fact based on her claim of her son's service, and th 1 CONC at he had willed all his land to his father, who had since died. Howeve 1 CONC r, I have yet to find evidence that her request was granted. Additionall 1 CONC y, the statement that he died in Service is confused by the fact that he m 1 CONC ade his will in Wake Co. a very few months before his death, and that the 1 CONC re is a Wake Co. court entry for him just a few weeks before his death. Th 1 CONC is suggests to me that he had come home from the army before he died. Perh 1 CONC aps rather than having been killed in conflict or dying in the field fr 1 CONC om illness, he took sick while serving and came home in hopes of getting w 1 CONC ell, but didn't. Or maybe Elizabeth was trying to pull a fast one twenty y 1 CONC ears later. 1 CONT = 1 CONT DEATH OF JOHN, SR. 1 CONT = Elizabeth outlived her husband, John Atkins, by 10 years. He died in 179 1 CONC 3, also in Wake Co, when George Washington was President, and just mont 1 CONC hs after the city of Raleigh had been formed.
